The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Thursday said it is a diplomatic procedure to inform the host country through diplomatic channels when any ambassador or high commissioner leaves the station which MoFA does not make public.

“It was not supposed to be shared publicly,” MoFA Spokesperson Seheli Sabrin told reporters when her attention was drawn about US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas’ station leave.

She said when any ambassador or high commissioner leaves the station, they are informing the MoFA through a diplomatic note, which also mentions who will be acting chief of the mission in absence of that particular diplomat.

They also need to inform their respective headquarters, said the Spokesperson.

Seheli also said there is no scope to spread misinformation or disinformation as there is a spokesperson at the US Embassy in Dhaka.

She said the same way if any Bangladeshi diplomat leaves the station, he or she also conveys it to the host country and MoFA here.

There has been much discussion since morning regarding the departure of Ambassador Haas though the US Embassy did not make any comment when approached to know what exactly happened.

A section of media reported that the US envoy went on vacation and left Dhaka on Thursday noon for Colombo, Sri Lanka.
